Hatchet Man – Movie Review (2003)

hatchet-man-movieCollege coed by day and a stripper by night, Claudia’s dream of becoming a lawyer seems within reach until her co-workers start turning up dead, victims of a brutal serial killer. Can Claudia and her friends stay alive along enough to expose the killer, or will they become the Hatchetman’s next victim?

Buried deep in this boring, unimaginative (but interesting and easy to watch) movie was some pretty well done gore effects. The effects were obviously low budget, but were very well done. I also liked the killer’s modus operandi– removing his victim’s hands. I also thought that the movie did a good job with supplying us with a handful of Red Herrings, and possible plot twists. The movie also gave us more than a share of tits and ass, these were supplied by the strippers that made up almost the entire cast.

When you think of a low budget slasher movie, what comes to mind? Bad acting? Bad script? Silly ending? Misleading DVD coverart? This movie serves nothing different on those levels, once again another shoddy attempt to try and recreate the magic that was lost by the end of the 1980′s. Whoever made this movie clearly knew that the movie was going to be a dud, and then added some bare tits to compensate– and then a misleading DVD cover. Unfortunately, both failed to make up for everything this movie lacked.

The DVD cover art depicts the killer standing in the woods with the title “Hatchet Man”. Which, led me to believe it would be another “in the woods slasher movie”, it wasn’t. None of it took place in the woods, and the movie was nothing more than a T n’ A fest with murders and blood– no complaints in that department from me– I just felt absolutely no connection with the cast in this film, and really found it very easy to lose interest in. The movie has found it’s rightful place in the $3.88 bin at Wal-Mart, don’t watch the movie unless you can sit through all of the crap to get to the really good kills. The movie wasn’t a major revelation, and will be easily forgotten by everyone– even die-hard slasher fans. In short, don’t watch this unless you obtained it very cheaply, or hopefully for free.
